Instagram Edits Video Editor App, updated August 2026
Create like a studio. Publish like a creator.
Instagram Edits is a free, standalone app from Instagram. It has a real multi-track timeline, auto-generated captions you can edit, a tool that cuts a subject out of the background without a green screen, and an actual green screen option too, for when you have one. None of it costs anything.
When you're done, export up to 4K with no watermark and post straight to Reels, Stories, or Feed without leaving the app. There's also a weekly list of video ideas based on what you've posted before, and a place to check how each video actually performed.
What Edits is (and where it stops)
Edits is Meta's free, standalone video editor built for Instagram creators. It launched in April 2025, not long after CapCut briefly disappeared from US app stores, and the idea behind it is fairly specific: capture, edit, and publish to Reels without leaving one app, then use the built-in insights to figure out what to make next.
It doesn't try to out-feature every other editor on the market. There's no huge template library or effects pack here, just a smaller, more deliberate set of tools. That works well for some creators and less well for others. The section further down goes into where the gaps actually are.
Inside the app

Every category below, with the specifics that actually matter when you're editing.
Capture
Record inside the app with control over focal length, frame rate, resolution, dynamic range, flash, and zoom. Clips can run up to 10 minutes each, well past the current Reels length limit.
Trim and sequence
Single-frame trimming across a multi-track timeline, plus split, speed, volume, mirror, slip, replace, and duplicate on individual clips.
AI-assisted finishing
Subject cutouts, editable auto-captions, AI restyling, a teleprompter, and keyframes for animating position, rotation, and scale over time.
Green screen and overlays
Chroma-key backgrounds, clickable link stickers to your account or a Reel, and layered text with saved styles you can reuse later.
Audio
Over 200 built-in sound effects, your own imported audio, and a Loudness Match setting that evens out volume differences between clips.
Organization
Folders for a growing project library, Project Versions for branching alternate cuts, and a weekly Ideas tab built around your own post history.
Export
Up to 4K with HDR or SDR support, always watermark-free, with presets tuned for Reels, Stories, and Feed.
Insights
Caption transcriptions and the ability to compare Reels side by side once they're posted, which feeds back into the Ideas tab.

Where Edits wins, and where it still doesn't
Most comparisons either sell you on Edits or write it off completely. Here's the trade-off as it stands right now.
Edits pulls ahead here
- Free AI features with no monthly cap, while CapCut limits some AI tools on its free tier
- Direct publishing to Reels with native, built-in insights
- A clean, always-visible multi-track layout that's easy to read at a glance
- Watermark-free exports at no cost, with no upsell attached
CapCut still pulls ahead here
- A much larger library of templates, transitions, and trend-ready effects
- More advanced color grading and speed-ramping tools
- A desktop app you can actually download today
- Cross-platform publishing that isn't limited to Instagram
A couple more things worth knowing: some early users have reported occasional crashes when switching between clips, and transition options are still thinner than CapCut's. Projects also stay on the device where you made them, they don't sync automatically across your phone and other devices. Draft sharing is limited to feedback over message, not true real-time co-editing.
Getting good results, not just faster edits
A practical run-through, with the habit that makes each stage a little less painful.
-
Start from the Ideas tab if you're stuck
It surfaces fresh prompts based on what's already worked for your account. Beats staring at a blank project.
-
Set capture settings before you shoot
Frame rate and dynamic range are easy to fix in advance and painful to fix after the fact. Shoot slightly wider than you think you need.
-
Trim before you decorate
Get the cut right first. Add captions, cutouts, and keyframed motion last, so earlier structural changes don't undo the detail work.
-
Branch a Project Version before a risky edit
Trying a different hook or a different pacing? Branch first. It's the built-in safety net so you don't wreck a working cut.
-
Proofread auto-captions
They're a good starting point, not a finished product. Check the transcript before you publish.
-
Check Insights weekly, not per post
One video's numbers don't tell you much on their own. A pattern across several is worth acting on.
Specific questions, specific answers
Is Edits actually free, with no catch?
Yes. Free to download, free to use, and exports don't carry a watermark. Meta hasn't introduced a paid tier for the app.
Why doesn't Edits have more templates and effects?
Looks like a deliberate design choice, not a missing feature that's about to ship. Edits leans toward a smaller, more controlled toolset over a big trend-template library, and it's one of the clearer gaps against CapCut today.
Do my projects sync across my phone and other devices?
Not right now. Projects stay on the device you created them on. There's no automatic sync across devices or accounts yet.
Can other people co-edit a project with me?
Only in a limited sense. You can share a draft for feedback over message, but there's no real-time collaborative editing.
Is there really a desktop version coming?
Meta has shown one working and called it "coming soon." As of this page's last check, there's still no public release date or download link. The full breakdown, including what's confirmed and what isn't, is in this guide.
Is this Edits' official site?
No. EditsInsta is an independent, unofficial guide with no affiliation to Meta or Instagram. Use the official App Store and Google Play links for the real app.
Bottom line
Free, capable, and still missing a few things.
Worth using today if you post mostly to Instagram. Worth waiting on if you specifically need desktop.
Edits isn't officially available for Windows or Mac today. A desktop build has been shown publicly and is in closed testing, with no announced release date. You can use Edits on Android or iPhone right now.
